SaaS sprawl – the proliferation of applications within an organization, including unsanctioned shadow IT – has created an urgent need for IT and security leaders: keeping sensitive data secure while enabling employees to use the apps they need. That’s why we feel that Trelica by 1Password’s inclusion in the 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SaaS Management Platforms marks more than just a milestone. It signals the growing need for unified SaaS governance and security.

The 2024 report was the first Gartner Magic Quadrant for SaaS Management Platforms (SMPs)1. We believe that including SMPs among other Magic Quadrant2 categories signals that they are becoming a critically important tool for managing both security and budgets, especially in the face of the proliferation of SaaS apps and shadow IT.

Since this is a relatively new category, it’s also worth sharing how Gartner defines SMPs and their core capabilities:

Gartner defines SaaS management platforms (SMP) as software tools that aim to help organizations discover, manage, optimize and automate the SaaS application life cycle from one centralized console. Core SMP capabilities include discovery, cost optimization, employee self-service via an application store, insights to increase adoption, and automation of onboarding/offboarding activities. - 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SaaS Management Platforms

Why SMPs are critical to closing the Access-Trust Gap

According to Gartner, “Through 2027, organizations that fail to centrally manage SaaS life cycles will remain five times more susceptible to a cyber incident or data loss due to incomplete visibility into SaaS usage and configuration.”

They also estimate that, “Through 2027, organizations that fail to attain centralized visibility and coordinate SaaS life cycles will overspend on SaaS by at least 25% due to unused entitlements and unnecessary, overlapping tools.”

Unmanaged and unsecured applications form a part of the Access-Trust Gap, which refers to the security risks posed by unfederated identities and unmanaged devices, applications, and AI-powered tools accessing company data without proper governance controls.

Trelica by 1Password helps mitigate these risks by detecting and eliminating duplicative and unused licenses, discovering unsanctioned shadow IT, and securing access to resources throughout the user lifecycle. It provides robust discovery capabilities for both downloaded applications and web apps, with detailed reporting that tracks not just what applications are in use but who is using them, as well as their security and privacy policies. Crucially, Trelica by 1Password makes these insights actionable, offering flexible workflows for automating onboarding, offboarding, provisioning, and privilege escalation tasks.

Closing the Access-Trust Gap is the fundamental goal of 1Password Extended Access Management. It secures every sign-in, to every app, from every device – a critical need in a world where employees can sign themselves or their teams up for new apps in a few minutes, bypassing IT and Security oversight entirely.

Rather than trying to eliminate this behavior, Trelica by 1Password empowers employees to find and adopt the tools that make them most productive. It streamlines the process of accessing SaaS apps via the self-serve hub but brings every work-related app under IT control. With 350+ integrations, automated workflows, and lifecycle management, Trelica by 1Password helps empower IT and Security teams to manage their sprawling landscape of SaaS apps from a single, simple tool and efficiently secure their organization.

“With all of the rich data on our SaaS applications and users in one place, the SOC 2 auditing process is much faster, easier, and less stressful for everyone involved.” — ElectroNeek

Trelica by 1Password’s future as part of Extended Access Management

Gartner included Trelica in their evaluation before its acquisition by 1Password, and now, we believe, this development is accelerating the trajectory of both Trelica by 1Password and 1Password as a whole.

Our strengths will only improve as Trelica by 1Password becomes more deeply integrated into the 1Password Extended Access Management platform. Responding to customer needs quickly, identifying new feature requests, and adopting a regular release cycle to deliver fixes were core strengths of Trelica. And now – with the resources of 1Password at its disposal – it is even better positioned to meet the needs of companies and scale up as those needs evolve.

Trelica by 1Password helps advance Extended Access Management by:

  • Giving IT visibility into every SaaS app, managed or not, across all devices.
  • Automating lifecycle management and access provisioning for managed and shadow apps.
  • Helping organizations enforce access policies that combine app, device, and identity context.
